Thirty-fifth was the "Main Street" of the Central Manufacturing District.
Note that the Bascule drawbridge has been replaced by a fixed bridge as
the South Fork has little boat traffic these days. This area is still in
use as an industrial district as the photograph makes plain, though not at
the intensity it been around World War I. One of the long-time occupants
of the district, the Spiegel company, moved out in the mid-1990s. The
Spiegel buildings are located on the right side of the photograph with the
water tanks on top. Across the street from Spiegel was the former Central
Manufacturing District bank, now occupied by the Chicago National (Harris)
Bank.
