This view looks north from the Pershing road bridge. At one time, the
South Fork had itself forked -- into the West Fork of the South Fork of
the South Branch of the Chicago river and the East Fork.... The
East Fork had been remade into the Union Stock Yards slip. This was the
worst segment of "Bubbly Creek," a fermenting stew of animal, vegetable,
and industrial waste. The Forks of the South Fork, in little better
condition than stinky quicksand, were filled in after the Central
Manufacturing District had been established.
