Cirriculum Development Theme

The African Scientific Research Museum Institute™® formed as a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing high quality, cost-effective, creative programming and curriculum that informs, educates and inspires professionals, students and the general public. The videos and curriculum produced and developed by The African Scientific Research Museum Institute™® are based on historical and original research. The videos, which are used in conjunction with the curriculum, focus on specific needs, objectives and audiences and make an impact by educating, motivating and entertaining viewers.

For the purpose of this Grant, the Institute (ASRI)™ will develop a secondary educationally curriculum, will be used by teachers and students, in conjunction with the Institute’s documentary production of the life and work of Jean Baptiste DuSable and the role he played in developing the economic structure in Illinois and in the United States. The curriculum work will result in a carefully and accurately documented account of DuSable’s life and legacy. Curriculum writers, who are familiar with history, geography, sociology, and science, will produce a written account of the multiple aspects of DuSable’s life. The curriculum will also elucidate and represent the work of DuSable in economic and political terms. To enhance the curriculum, the Institute(ASRI)™® will translate written curriculum into interactive, Internet technology, which will allow students to view the curriculum on an interactive web site that focuses on the life of DuSable.

The reality of DuSable’s ethnic heritage will be emphasized, as well as, his contribution as a historically important explorer and pioneer. The Curriculum will also focus on DuSable’s family contribution as the founder of Chicago and his significance in the historical development of Illinois and the entire Mississippi River Watershed. The importance of DuSable’s contributions to history will be emphasized through the utilization of original research conducted through the DuSable symposium© and research related to the DuSable dig and DNA Investigation. The curriculum will be updated on a regular basis, providing children of middle school age a living history and perpetual memorial to a historical figure.

In its completion, the project will advance public awareness, understanding and appreciation of DuSable, who is a pivotal American future. The project will provide information about the founder and first settler of the Chicago community to the public. During the developmental stages of the project, researchers will uncover new factual material using science, math and cultural history that will allow them to revise school curricula and reconstruct Chicago’s history.

The Documentary of Jean Baptiste DuSable, to be developed with other sources of funding, will appear on a national prime time television station and will be marketed and advertised. The documentary will air on local and network television. The Institute will advertise the production via newspaper, television guides and television promotional interviews, etc. The curriculum will be offered to teachers/schools. The Institute (ASRI)™® will make copies of the documentary video available upon request.

Institute Tasks:

The Institute (ASRI)™® shall, in accordance with Part 1 hereof, utilize Grant funds towards costs associated with the following salaries and activities:Grant funds will be used to pay contractual curriculum writers who will develop and update the curriculum relating to the documentary of Jean Baptise DuSable. The Institute will pay for traveling expenses that are necessary for the curriculum writers to research and develop information that is related to the documentary of Jean Baptiste DuSable and curriculum.
