Volunteer
How do I apply to become a volunteer?
Fill out the
application form and return it to the Volunteer Department? If you have
specific questions you would like added to this list, please contact
the Volunteer Department.
What are the benefits of volunteering?
There
is a range of possible benefits. Volunteering is a great way to develop
new skills, add experiences to a resume, and meet people from the local
community and from around the world. As a volunteer you can contribute
your skills and experiences to your community.
Do I need to be good at science?
No
science background or experience is required. All you need is an inquisitive
mind, a little enthusiasm, and a desire to get involved.
What kinds of work or project are there?
There
are a variety of different volunteer opportunities, although our specific
volunteer needs vary depending on which exhibitions, programs, and projects
are currently supported. Volunteer may be selected for upcoming excavations
at dig sites, providing support for the annual symposium/work shops,
staff the visitors service desk during the annual symposium and other
areas. Volunteers sometimes choose to move from one area of volunteer
support to another, in order to become involved with new projects, learn
additional skills, and meet new people.
Can I pick the type of work I want to do?
You
can describe your interest and skills, and we will look for a volunteer
position that is a good match (we can only offer positions that are
currently open).
Are there any requirements for becoming a
volunteer?
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. If you
are younger, there are volunteer opportunities for you with other
volunteer, science, and learning programs (we hope when you are 18,
you will consider becoming an ASRI volunteer!)
What kinds of volunteer help do the African Scientific
Research Institute need most?
Our volunteer needs change depending on
what exhibitions, programs, and projects we are supporting. There are
several areas where volunteers are almost always needed: assisting at
the Annual symposium/workshops, assisting with clerical and data entry
(administrative and technical support; and working on research for Special
Programs.
Can I volunteer if my work schedule changes
weekly?
Scheduling must be done a minimum of a week in advance.
If your work schedule changes weekly, and you know a week in advance
what your new schedule will be, we may be able to arrange times for
you to volunteer.
What if I need training?
If the
African Scientific Research Institute assigns tasks to a volunteer,
the ASRI will provide the necessary training. Many of the volunteer
positions do not require a highly technical set of skills (although
people with specialized skills are always encouraged to apply). However,
some activities do require a particular skill-set and experience.
Is volunteer work paid?
Volunteer
work is not paid (however, there are other types of benefits available).
As a nonprofit educational science research institute/museum, we rely
on the goodwill and support of the community and our volunteers to develop
and maintain our programs.
Will volunteering help me find a job?
Volunteering
is a way of gaining additional experience and new skills for resumes,
while contributing to the community. By engaging in the wide variety
of volunteer opportunities possible in the Institute/museum, you can
gain new skills and technical knowledge, learn how to work with the
public, develop teaching skills, and refine work habits and management
techniques. Enhance your resume by listing these experiences, skills,
and volunteer work. Also, a more direct way to gain job-specific experience
is to request specific volunteer work. For example, a person training
to be an accountant could ask to volunteer in the accounting office.
Does the African Scientific Research Institute
ever hire volunteers for paid positions?
Yes. While volunteering
does not guarantee that a specific individual will be hired, 5% of
our qualified volunteers have been offered paid position in past year
at the Archaeological sites. An interview may be possible when a volunteer
possesses appropriate qualifications, and there is a job opening for
a staff position.
