Present

Update: ADA Amendments Act of 2008

The definition of Disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act has changed as a result of the ADA Amendments Act of 2008.  Join us as we learn how these changes will impact employees/employers and students/universities and colleges.  This presentation will include useful information for human resources personnel, supervisors and faculty, staff and students with disabilities.  Participants will have an opportunity to participate in a question and answer session following the presentation.

PAST EVENTS:

Activities will include, but not be limited to:

1) Support for individuals with disabilities to realize their educational goals by facilitating physical and programmatic access to the full range of UIC programs and services. This includes addressing attitudinal and environmental barriers that may be present.

2) Support for recruitment, admission, and services for individuals with disabilities who are seeking admission to the University as well as those who are currently enrolled as students.

3) Support for equality of opportunity in recruitment, hiring and retention of individuals with disabilities to work as staff members, both academic and non-academic.

4) Addressing University fringe benefits and services, especially those directly affecting individuals with disabilities.

5) Identifying and promoting individuals with disabilities who are qualified to participate in the policy-making structure of the campus.

6) Bringing issues of particular concern to people with disabilities to the general university community.

7) Promotion and implementation of policies and procedures which create a universally accessible environment and make all services, programs and activities readily accessible to and useable by people with disabilities.

8) Promotion of research on our campus intended to improve the status of people with disabilities in society.

9) Providing and promoting programming on campus that includes people with disabilities and co-sponsoring campus events as appropriate.

10) Supporting the participation of Committee members at leadership and educational conferences, meetings and activities related to disability issues in higher education.

11) Collaborates with the campus organization of students with disabilities

12) Provides leadership and representation on campus task forces and committees which address disability related policies and issues

13) Periodically assesses, through survey, interviews or external consultants, how the campus is perceived by students, staff, faculty and visitors with and without disabilities

14) Communication of the Committees mission and activities through electronic communication including maintenance of a web site and periodic announcements on appropriate campus list serves and publications.

15) Collaboration with other Status Committees on areas of mutual interest and concern.
