2000 – 2001 Past Events:
- CCSPD ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
- Two exemplary honorees received
CCSPD Achievement Awards at our annual awards banquet. This event marks a
departure from the previous CCSPD award event known as the “Extra Mile”
luncheon. Instead of presenting numerous awards for a variety of
achievements as we had in the past, we decided that limiting the award to
one or two exemplary individuals or units would better convey the
significance of this recognition. The banquet was held at the University
Village Hyatt Regency Hotel. In an effort to promote a spirit of campus
collaboration on disability issues, we invited representatives from Access
and Equity, staff from the Office of Disability Services, members of the
Disabled Student Union, and faculty from the Disability Studies program as
well as CCSPD members. We were honored to have this year’s awards
presented by Interim Provost Tate and Vice Chancellor Henley. Each
recipient of the new award was given a plaque honoring them for their:
“significant contribution toward making UIC a more welcoming
and accessible environment for persons with disabilities”
o
This year’s
recipients were:
§
Zakiyyah
Wahid, Community Development
Specialist, University-Affiliated Program on Developmental Disability, in recognition
of her life long commitment to the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
§
The UIC
Child Care Center, in
recognition of its ongoing efforts to make its physical environment and
programs accessible and inclusive to children with disabilities and their
families.

OUT With the National Disabled
Students Union - What are we protesting: The Supreme Court's pattern of weakening
CIVIL RIGHTS protections in the name of "STATES' RIGHTS." The Census Bureau reports that 50% of
disabled people in America are unemployed, and those who do have jobs make
less money than the nondisabled. For the remaining 50%, on February 21, 2001, the conservative
majority on the Supreme Court delivered a severe blow to these workers'
rights when it ruled in the Trustees of the University of Alabama v.
