1996-1997 PAST EVENTS:

DISABILITY "ETIQUETTE"
The Cultural Climate Subcommittee produced labels to fit on the backs of the commuter bus ticket booklets. These labels address and inform riders of disability "etiquette," that is, guidelines that might help riders in their interaction with persons with disabilities. The labels read as follows:

Did you know . . . ? The seats in the front of the shuttle bus are priority seating for persons with disabilities.
Did you know . . . ? When offering seating to a person with a visual disability, place the person's hand on the back or arm of the seat.
Did you know . . . ? Before offering to assist someone with a disability, ask the person first if he or she wants assistance.
Did you know . . . ? Many shuttle buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts. Wheelchairs are an extension of personal space. Don't lean on them.
Did you know . . . ? It might take extra time for a person with a disability to get things done or said. Let the person set the pace in walking and talking.
Did you know . . . ? A person with a disability should not be referred to as "handicapped."
Did you know . . . ? Speak directly to a person with a disability rather than through a companion.
Did you know . . . ? Use a normal tone of voice when addressing a person with a hearing impairment unless you are requested to raise your voice.
Did you know . . . ? Do not interact with a guide dog while it is working (in harness).

THE EXTRA MILE AWARD
Luncheon and Award Ceremony
The Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities recognized UIC's Faculty and Staff members who went the "Extra Mile" in supporting students with disabilities. Students nominated people who helped make their year at UIC successful. We also honored students with disabilities who are graduating this year.
