TITLE: History Education Specialist

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Chicago Metro History Education Center (CMHEC) seeks a part-time history educator for its professional development and student outreach programs. Working in collaboration with fellow CMHEC staff members and other partners, the history education specialist will design, create, and implement professional development programs and educational materials that support historical inquiry and teachers' efforts to integrate History Fair methodology in their classrooms. Position requires the ability to design, adapt, and communicate effective and engaging strategies that teachers can use to teach research, critical thinking, the development of historical questions and presentation of a historical argument, and advanced historical thinking with a diverse mix of students in grades 6-12. The successful candidate will work with teachers in workshops and seminars, create print or online educational materials, and provide individual consultation to teachers and students. Position requires close collaboration with the executive director and associate director on grant proposals, implementation, and reporting. Some event planning/coordination and other duties as assigned. Position requires creativity, personal initiative, collaboration, organization, and an ability to inspire and communicate well with both teachers and students.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in education, history, or closely-related field required (master's preferred), plus minimum of two years in history education or comparable work experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Experience with urban schools, Chicago history, History Fair/National History Day preferred. Familiarity with digital tools for teaching history or designing educational materials for an online audience a plus.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience.

SCHEDULE: Flexible hours, some evenings/weekends required. Schedule varies (approx. half-time position, possibility to grow into FTE in the future).

TRAVEL: Some Chicago metro area travel required.
