The Appalachian culture can be a challenging population for mental health professionals. Individuals in the Appalachian region encounter a variety of obstacles in accessing appropriate health care this region has been widely characterized in various media forms such as the Beverly Hillbillies and Hee Haw. Despite the popularity of these portrayals, these media characterizations have not accurately reflected the rich culture, traditions and customs that exist in the Appalachian region. Consequently, the Appalachian culture remains an enigma to those in the helping profession.
In recent years, research has cited a variety of social issues in the Appalachian region. These realities have substantiated the increased need for mental health services in the Appalachian region. However, before the implementation of mental health services, it is imperative that one understands the core values of the Appalachian community.
This workshop will offer participants an overview of the Appalachian culture and highlight the rich traditions and values of this population. Both facilitators, who provide services to children in the Appalachian region, will share their experiences of implementing crisis intervention services in the Appalachian culture.
