Love is Not Abuse: Teens in Violent Relationships is designed to inform participants of the extent to which domestic violence exists in the lives of young people, and some specific considerations to keep in mind when working with this population. The facilitators will use activities, video clips and discussion to help increase participants' understanding of violence in teen relationships.
The facilitators will open the workshop with a definition for abuse and statistics to show the real picture of violence in teen relationships. Often times the teen population falls through the cracks because they are less likely to seek out adult intervention for their problems. Study after study shows the high rates of abuse among teens. This workshop will assist participants in recognizing signs of abuse and offer advice on how to approach a teen you suspect is being abused.
Domestic violence with teens happens in similar ways as in adult relationships, but there are important differences. The facilitators will cover the different ways abusers may use power and control, and the unique barriers teens face in recognizing and then addressing abuse in their relationships.
The workshop will end with a discussion on ways to intervene and help teens experiencing abuse. The facilitators will also talk about prevention education and strategies the participants can use to make sure teens are able to openly discuss their relationships with an adult who can give invaluable guidance and support.
