Tlie term "Compassion Fatigue" (C.F. ) was created by Dr. Charles R. Figley, Director of the Psychosocial Research Program at Florida State University in Tallahassee barely ten years ago. Also known as secondary trauma among other phrases, it. is described as a state of tension and preoccupation with the individual or cumulative traumas of our clients or patients, their families, their workplaces and ours! Symptoms include but are not limited to: re-experiencing those traumatic events, avoidance, numbing car reminders of the event(sj among others. This workshop will not only describe what C.F. is but differentiate it from job burnout and help participants to become pro-active in developing coping strategies and implementing programs in their workplaces to prevent C. F. We will also discuss the latest information about research and treatment of C. F.

Participants will learn:

What Compassion Fatigue is and understand the signs and symptoms of the condition.
To develop coping strategies to deal with C. F. with several case. illustrations
To discuss the latest research and development of treatment programs to deal with C.F.
Develop tools to educate ourselves and our workplaces in preventing C. F.
Discuss how we care for ourselves and review the field's commitment to dealing with and preventing C.F. in an evermore complicated world.
