Each year more than three million people are involved in serious automobile accidents, and well over six million persons suffer traumatic injures on the job. While the most immediate crisis for these individuals is the stabilization of their medical condition' each may suffer great psychological injuries as well. The American Psychological Association estimates that nearly 40% survivors involved in car accidents will develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with another 15 % developing driving phobias. Occupational injuries also can create unique psychological obstacles. Long-term injuries present even greater stress for the Victims. Many may face the loss of work for an extended time, chronic pain, and learning to deal with life-time disabilities.
Persons who face permanent disabilities often never have the opportunity to process their loss. Often the label of "disabled" can initiate a overwhelming sense of grief and despair. Traumatically injured clients who are disabled not only face the challenges of their physical limitations but numerous social obstacles as well. Similarly, clients can be faced with a lifetime of chronic pain and medical issues.
This workshop will address issues related to working with clients who have experienced traumatic injuries. Cognitive therapy techniques will be demonstrated to assist participants in working with victims of traumatic and disabling injuries. Topics covered include; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety and Phobias, Chronic Pain, and Grief. Current research and new innovative theories regarding traumatic and disabling injuries will be explored. Participants will be provided insight for working with the traumatically injured as well as the disabled.
As a result of a serious automobile accident, that left him disabled, the facilitator provide a unique perspective on this topic. Material will be developed from both theoretical research as well as personal experience
