UNDERSTANDING THE DISABILITY PROGRAM

This presentation will provide information regarding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs.

All aspects of the disability process will be outlined from the application to the decision. The federal/state relationship, the medical evaluation process, and the appeals process will be covered. Initiatives implemented in Illinois to assist or make the process easier for the claimant, such as referral services and crisis intervention, will also be reviewed.

The definition of disability according to the Social Security Administration will be explained. The Listing of Impairments that is used to determine disability will also be explained. The sequential evaluation process of the disability program will also be reviewed. Information regarding recent changes in Children's claims and Widow's claims will be reviewed. The medical documentation process, which includes obtaining Medical Evidence of Record (MER) from attending physicians and hospitals will be discussed, as well as situations where a Consultative Examination (CE) is needed.

In addition, the re-engineering proposal for the Social Security Administration will be reviewed. Several recent proposed changes regarding payment to substance abusers, children and legal immigrants will also be reviewed.

Fact Sheets will be presented and a question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Also, an individual from a local Social Security office will be available to provide information and answer questions regarding the administrative aspects of the disability program.
