Attendees to this workshop will learn how crisis centers can charge for taking calls from 1-800-SUICIDE. How
agencies can contract with counties that have no direct service, providing back up to Community Mental Health Centers,
and working with KBHC to broker the more than 5,000 potential county contracts in the US to build a tighter safety net
through 1-800-SUICIDE and the member agencies that make up the National Hopeline Network. Charles C. Ray (past
CEO of NCCBH) will be giving this presentation. He is a powerful speaker with 17 years of experience in helping
CMHC's navigate through the complex world of fee for service.
In 1963 the Community Mental Health Services Act had a mandated list of core services with one of them being crisis line staffed 24x7. In 1981 that act was repealed and the mandate with it. Meanwhile many states have reinstated that mandate and this has resulted in many contracts with outside agencies providing this much needed service. KBHC and its partner agencies have a great opportunity to help community mental health facilities achieve this goal of 24 x 7 crisis line services while keeping costs down. Together we can help strengthen the safety net while supporting our networked members by brokering these contracts for after hours and 24 x 7 coverage of their crisis lines while taking calls from 1-800-SUICIDE (and getting paid for them) from the same catchment area.
