It is projected that the population of Anglo ancestry will constitute no more than 50% of the United States population by the year 2000. By the year 2000, the racial and ethnic composition of the American population will form a different pattern. Whites will represent a decline in the population from 76 to 72 percent. There. will be a rise in the Hispanics from 8 to 11.3 percent. Blacks will increase front 12.4 to 13.1 percent. Other racial groups, including American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asians and Pacific Islanders, will increase from 3.5 to 4.3 percent. Likewise, ethnic and racial groups will double inl the next 55 years. These demographics suggest that human service providers need to develop new ways to provide service to a diverse population. Increasing diversity of cultural backgrounds will present assessment challenges for years to come. Consequently, volunteers involved in crisis work will need to become culturally competent as the population becomes mare diverse. This workshop is designed to address the implications associated with the diversification of our client population by providing guidelines activities and strategies to help met the demands of intervening with a diverse population.
