School-Based Education Programs

Registered dietitians (RD’s) and Nutrition peer educators (NPE’s) provide training to coalition members and health center staff on principles of healthy lifestyle, nutrition and life skills using literature and handouts covering a broad range of nutrition and fitness topics. Nutrition trainers work with health centers and school staff to schedule at least one nutrition fair per school year to provide students and families with interactive information on healthy eating, physical fitness, snacking, etc. Nutrition trainers work in partnership with health center and CPS student health services staff to disseminate nutrition education through one -on-one contact with targeted messages in lunchrooms, waiting area messages, information published in school newsletters, and open houses for students, families and other community members to expand the content to include cooking lessons, low fat food tasting, food safety tips and demonstrations, etc.
