Summer Camp at Chicago Park District and Community Sites

In conjunction with the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion provides interactive nutrition education programming and organized physical activity to school-age children during the summer to promote healthier food choices and increase physical activity. The Summer Camp Nutrition Program provides scheduled nutrition education and physical activity programming to 14 day camp programs offered to children through the Chicago Park District. Nutrition education is provided to each site one day each week for a total of six weeks. The Summer Camp Nutrition Program staff spend one hour on site, which is split equally between education and activity. The lessons include information on food groups, breakfast, healthy snacks, label reading, sugar and fat content of foods, food safety and hand washing. In addition, each weekly lesson includes a learning activity to reinforce concepts and assess knowledge. The physical activity portion of the program is designed to promote team work, skill building, and fitness.
