Jane: Abortion and the Underground Official
Women invariably have had the right to choose.
Its just not always been legal.
May 9, 2001- Madison, WI On June 7th 2001 Millenium Theater presents
Jane: Abortion and the Underground by Paula Kamen a play about
a group of Hyde Park students and housewives who safely performed over
10,000 abortions between 1969 and 1973.
It all begins when Heather Booth, an activist in the
Movement, is asked to help the sister of a friend to find a safe abortion.
The story details the emergence of a group of women first dedicated
to helping women finding abortions and until they are finally arrested
in May of 1973.
The play was originally produced by Green Highway in
Chicago and was included in The Best Stage Monologues of 1999 and
The Best Stage Scenes of 1999 published by Smith and Kraus. It
was a finalist in the Moondance Film Festival for the Columbine non-violence
There will be a series of talk backs with participants
ranging from the author and local figures involved in this issue. By
sharing this amazing story, Millenium Theater hopes to encourage community
dialog and empower women to make choices.
