The meeting began at 6:00 p.m. and was co-chaired by Drew Browning and Carol Gill. The "history" of the DACC Committee, including its origins and its accomplishments, was reviewed. The group engaged in much discussion of issues concerning fund-raising, DACC's relationship with the University and its units (College of Associated Health Professions; Institute on Disability and Human Development; Chicago Center for Disability Research), becoming a 501(c)(3), space requirements, "art" v. "culture," and maintaining our own autonomy and integrity as a community-driven organization. It was unanimously decided to incorporate with the state as a not-for-profit organization with the name THE DISABILITY ARTS AND CULTURE CENTER. Diane Coleman and Ginger Lane agreed to explore options for filing this paperwork. Ginger also agreed to investigate the possibility of applying for 501(c)(3) status. It was also agreed that Chicago Center for Disability Research (CCDR) would be the University host or sponsor for DACC, acting as the liaison between the community and the University. The by-laws from Dance Detour will be offered as an example for use in preparing DACC's by-laws. A temporary and voluntary Board was formed. (It is important to note this Board is ad hoc for the sake of expediency and pragmatism; members should be added for more diversity and cross-disability representation.) The current Board members are: Drew Browning, Diana Jordan, Ginger Lane, Melinda Morrissey, Rob Rotman, Alana Yvonne Smith, Anna Stonum, Larry Voss, and Kathleen Rose Winter. Anna volunteered to be DACC's temporary Board Secretary. Kathleen is doing the same as President. It was agreed that the majority of Board members should be persons who identify as Disabled. Suggested Committees are: 1) Outreach and Multi-Cultural Diversity, 2) Publicity/Marketing, 3) Programming, 4) Finance/Fundraising, 5) Logistics (space, incorporation). Those attending the meeting decided that the Board and anyone willing to work on a Committee can participate. The next meeting will be Tuesday, 10/21/97 at 6:00 p.m. in Room #204 at 1640 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago. Larry Voss Darien, IL lvoss@interaccess.com
