ADA Advocacy project

Taking it to the Streets: Minorities seeking to improve the accessibility of their communities

Objectives of the project

  1. Describe the purpose of the Taking it to the Streets project
  2. Review the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    Specifically Title III- Public Accommodations
  3. Conduct a training on how to conduct an ADA accessibility survey in your community

Taking it to the Streets Project

Overall, improve the physical accessibility of businesses and places open to the public

Three cities are involved: Chicago, Washington, DC, Miami, Florida

Approximately, 20 African-Americans and 20 Latinos are participating

Participants…

attend an ADA workshop

conduct 5 accessibility surveys in their communities

provide feedback to business owners and managers

revisit the 5 sites three and six months later

Participants report information to university project staff

Get paid for their time and effort by the Center for Independent Living
