Q: FROM MENTEE BRYNN S. IN REGION VII
Hi, I'm really interested in going into human genetics, but I'm having a hard figuring out which of the schools that I want to go to have the best human genetics program. Do you know of any schools that seem to stand out in this area, if not do you know how i could go about to compare the programs at each school? thanks.

A: FROM MENTOR JOAN LUSK. To read Joan's bio click here.
First you should look for strong biology programs, then check which
ones have good offerings in genetics in general and human genetics in
particular. Courses in bio ethics would be good. If your interest
leans more toward counseling, then a school that offers counseling
programs (medically oriented or social work in general) in addition
to having strong biology and genetics might let you combine the
science background with its application. I don't have specific
suggestions to make, partly because I don't know the answers and
partly because I think you can get a good start towards this field at
many schools. If you know of anyone doing the kind of work that
interests you - whether it's on the scientific research side or the
counseling side - it would be a good idea to ask that person what the
top several programs at the college level are. It may be that most
college biology programs will let you get a good grounding in the
basics, and true specialization should come later. There are so many
factors in choosing a college - large or small, rural or urban, cost,
extracurricular opportunities - that the choice is multi-faceted. I
doubt that there is a single "best" school for future human
geneticists. That probably seems very unhelpful to you - but freedom
and choice, wonderful as they are, are also burdens at times!
