QUESTION FROM NICOLE J. IN MASSACHUSETTS:
How can Math be used in my everyday life?

Hi Nicole-
I guess to anwer you question totally I would need to know how old you are
and what your lifestyle is like.
We all use math everyday. I am a mechanical engineer and I use math
constantly in my work. If you like math - engineering might be a career
choice for you. However, I am going to assume you are a teenager, and
being a teenager I bet you spend money any chance you get. Every trip to
the store or mall has you using math. You subtract anything you buy from
the amount of money in your purse. If you have your license and drive a
car, you watch your gas gage to know when you need to stop for gas. Lets
say your gas tank holds 20 gallons, and that your car gets 18 miles to the
gallon. That means you can go approx. 360 miles on a tank of gas. That
was figured out with multiplication. If you only have a quarter of a tank
showing on your gauge (dial) you know you can only go 90 more miles or so
before you need gas. I figured that using division. If you have a job,and
you cash your paycheck - you add that amount to what is already in your
purse to know what your total cash amount is. If you want to cut something
you take a ruler and using numbers you measure by sections to a dimension
or length for the cut. Every little line on the ruler is a portion of a
whole. That is math. Every time you turn around you are using math and
don't even realize it. Math is very important to keep your life's finances
in order. Math teaches you to think logically, and is a dicipline good to
have. Study and practice math, learning to do it well -- and I am sure
your everyday life will be grand. Good luck, study hard.
