A: FROM MENTEE MAGGIE K. IN CT
I have a reply to Stephanie's question about summer camps
offered by universities in connecticut. Project Oceanology
offers a summer camp for kids between grades 5 and 12. it
is located in Groton at Avery point which is part of Uconn.
There are three different types of camps each one for a different
group of grades. During the session there are trips to mystic
aquarium and snorkeling. there are about five different weeks
for 5-7 graders, 2 or 3 different weeks for 7-9 graders and
one week for 9-12 graders. but you can choose water week you
want the is off shore waters, shallow waters and shoreline
habitats. for more information you can go to http://www.oceanology.org.

Stephanie, that is great that you want to try and get some
research
experience so soon! You can always contact the University
of CT, check
their web page and search through the faculty bios. Often
they tell you
what someone is doing for research. Pick one that interests
you and
contact them about possibilities of working with them. Also,
they might
know what programs they have used in the past that have brought
students
in for work experiences. Another avenue you might try is www.eco.org,
which is an environmental careers organization that finds
internships
for people- they are usually in the environmental field, so
it depends
on if you are interested in that. Good luck!

Here's a site for math programs,
http://www.ams.org/employment/mathcamps.html
with one of its locations in CT:
UConn Mentor Connection
Location: University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT
Web site: http://www.gifted.uconn.edu/mentoruc.html
And marine science in Avery Point or Milford, CT
http://www.accessexcellence.org/AE/AEC/AEF/1996/morgan_research.html
And medical research (some high school programs included)
http://medicine.uchc.edu/departments/studentservices/summerprograms/index.shtml
And links to many summer programs, many topics, many locations
(including ours at Brown - not far from eastern CT)
http://www.jhu.edu/gifted/imagine/linkA.htm
and in medicine at Yale
http://info.med.yale.edu/omca/programs/hppi.htm
and a water-quality project
http://www.sciencecenterct.org/projectsearch/summer.htm
I searched for <summer research CT "high school">
to come up with
these - the ones I copied are just among the first two pages
of hits.
You could narrow your search by field of interest, probably.
