How [much training] does a doctor need to be able to work in a trauma center?

The answer is that it varies. Some trauma surgeons who work qute a
bit in the emergency room go to college for 4 years, medical school for 4
years and then surgical residencies of up to 7-12 years. However, these
physicians spend most of their time in the operating room and their office.
They only come to the emergency room when called for traumas. The
emergency room physicians who only work in the emergency room typically do
either emergency medicine or family practice residencies which are both 3
years in length.
