Q: FROM MENTEE ERIN R. IN KY
I was wondering if there was any way I could combine
dermatology and computers into a career?

A: FROM MENTOR GOPIKA CHANDRA, To read Gopika's bio. click here.
To my understanding, computers can be used in application of Dermatology. With
the help of internet, vast literature searches can be performed accessing
online journals and other information sources all over the world. The
computers can be also used in storing patient's information in a more
systematic manner. All the Hi-Tech techniques like lazer etc. used in
treatment of various dermatologic ailments require basic knowledge of
computers to perform the procedure. While performing Cosmetic surgery, with
the use of programming the cosmetic changes can be predicted before even
operating the patient. This leads to greater patient's satisfaction and a
better treatment outcome.

Teldermatology is being used in various universities as an aid for physicians
to diagnose. It is an easy to access, web-based system that maximizes the
efficiency of both the provider requesting a consult and the dermatologist.
Easy browser-based forms allow for input of history and images associated with
a case. The objective is to provide a diagnostic and therapeutic plan to the
requesting provider within a short time. It requires to acquire cutaneous
images and digitize them, through a digital camera or through a film/slide
digitizer.

I hope this helps.
