Q: FROM MENTEE ALISON B. IN MO
What paperwork and legal requirements do I have to complete before I could begin research and testing on mice?

A: FROM MODERATOR SARAH SHIRK, CHICAGO, IL
There are many federal laws in place to protect research subjects. I work at the University of Illinois which has an animal care committee that reviews all research to make sure that it is humane. The paperwork is very complex and detailed. Researchers invest many hours in preparing these documents BEFORE any research is started.

To learn more, I recommend going to the National Institutes of Health Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) web site located at http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/olaw/olaw.htm

It takes many hours of training to learn all the regulations. OLAW is a good place to start.
