Hi Ashley! I have often talked in my sleep and so have
my sisters and my partner. In fact, my partner and I often
wake each other up because we are sleep talking!
Usually for me I sleep talk when I am under a lot of stress,
and it is usually associated with a very unpleasant dream.
However, some people laugh and giggle in their sleep too.
I looked around on the internet briefly and didn't find much
information, but what I found suggested that talking in your
sleep may be associated with stress, or with having a fever,
or may be caused by some event in the waking world breaking
through to your dreaming consciousness. Apparently
children talk in their sleep more frequently than adults (so it
said on the internet site I found) and people who sleep walk
are also more likely to sleep talk. All the sites I looked at said
that sleep talking was not a sign of anything serious or
anything to be worried about, and that often sleep talkers
cannot be understood by those around them - they frequently
mumble rather than speak clearly. Although I remember once,
when I was young, sitting in a room where my brother was
sleeping on the floor - he suddenly sat bolt upright, with his
eyes wide open, picked up his tennis shoe that was near him,
held it out in front of him, and announced clearly, "You just need
to fold it in a little around the edges, like this" and proceeded to
try folding his shoe. He lay right back down, closed his eyes,
and was clearly back in deep sleep. We all laughed so loud
he woke up, but he did not remember anything of what he
had done or said!
