Q: (Initially posted on 8/5) FROM YUNJI K. IN IL
When I was both on the road (East coast) and back home at Chicago, I noticed that some flies "bite." It may sound weird but they had a shinny coat and it hurts after a couple of seconds after they land (on people's skin) . According to my dad, the "flies were biting him." Can this be true? Are there really flies that bite?

Flies definitely bite and they hurt! The worst ones are the horse
flies -- they can be as big as an inch long. They don't have any
venom like a bee nor do they provoke an allergic reaction like
moquitoes. I don't know why they bite but my grandmother always said
that flies bite before a rain. I don't know if that's true, but I've
learned that there is a lot of wisdom in "old wives tales".
