Q: (Initially posted on 8/5) FROM

When I was both on the road (East coast) and back home at Chicago,
I noticed that some flies "bite." It may sound weird
but they had a shinny coat and it hurts after a couple of seconds
after they land (on people's skin) . According to my dad, the
"flies were biting him." Can this be true? Are there
really flies that bite? |

Flies definitely bite and they hurt! The worst ones are the
horse
flies -- they can be as big as an inch long. They don't have
any
venom like a bee nor do they provoke an allergic reaction
like
moquitoes. I don't know why they bite but my grandmother always
said
that flies bite before a rain. I don't know if that's true,
but I've
learned that there is a lot of wisdom in "old wives tales".
