Q: (Initially posted on 8/13) FROM MENTEE KARIMA A. IN MA
How will I apply science in my everyday life in the
21st century, as compared with the 20th century?

A: FROM MENTOR KRISTIN TAGHON, FOR BIO. CLICK HERE.

Karima,

If you think about how life has changed for us even since 1999, you can think of
ways that science and technology will change.

For example, the internet did not get very popular until 1996. Now, people are
using it every day! Not only young who can learn it in school, but also people
who don't even need to use it for work, and senior citizens! It's a great,
cheap way to communicate with their loved ones by using email, and also a great
resource for information. This technology is still in it's infant stages, so I
think it will change in leaps and bounds for a while.

Also, with terrorism affecting the U.S. more directly now, I assume we will have
more devices for security developed, we will probably see better technology used
by the FBI and CIA to detect problems earlier. As you go to the airport,
security technology will affect you.

Think of the Snakehead fish and how it was introduced to this country's lakes
just recently. Ecologists had to determine if it was a problem and how to deal
with it once they did. This is same with the Japanese beetle or other animal
and bug life introduced to this country through shipping commerce. People have
to deal with them in their gardens.

Everyday, newer and hopefully, better, technology is developed for the average
consumer. New mops that are easier and quicker to use (where the bottle of
cleaner is attached to the mop), wipes for disinfecting in the bathrooms so that
you don't have to get a bottle and a sponge out. You just use it and throw it
out. I think this will eventually cause a problem in our ecosystem which will
then have to be dealt with.

Hopefully, we will have cell phones that will work in every country, no matter
where you are. This is currently being developed now. You will probably own
one of these phones someday.

Drugs are constantly being developed to conquer diseases that have been around a
while, like cancer, and others that have not, like Aids. As these are
developed, you will know more and more people who are saved by these drugs and
treatments.

With the onset of new technology and sciences, it has an affect on us and
society which may be detrimental or not!! As this is determined, science is
applied again and again. It is applied to build on good technology and applied
to reverse problems caused by some technologies and practices.

Kristin
