Which functions do you have in mind? Hormones control some things;
biological clocks control some; our conscious will controls how we
move (or at least we have a strong illusion that we have free will!)
We have deciphered a lot of mechanisms for how these control systems
work on a molecular level - each different in detail but classifiable
into broad mechanistic categories.
