Q: According to the Timber Wolf Alliance located on the Internet at http://www.northland.edu/soei/twa/index.html
this week is NATIONAL WOLF AWARENESS WEEK.
How long ago were wolves granted protection under
the federal Endangered Species Act? Do you think this
was necessary or unnecessary and why?

A: FROM MENTEE KELLY B. IN PA
I read where the wolfs were granted protection 30 years ago. If this site was
current, 30 years ago would be 1972. I think that the wolves should be placed
under this protection because people stereotype wolves. They think that all
wolves are mean and harmful then, try to wipe out the population. Really,
wiping out the population of wolves, or any animal, will cause more problems
such as problems in the food chain. If one animal eats a wolf, that animal
would be out of food. Another animal is eaten by a wolf, causing an over
population of rabbits, ect. As you can see the wolf protection act was a very
good idea.

Thirty years ago wolves were granted protection
under the federal Endangered Species Act.I think
this was neccesary because if they hadn't there
probably wouldn't be any wolves today, at all.

Endangered Species Act.
I believe that placing the wolves under the federal Endangered Species Act
was necessary in protecting their lives. If they were not protected, then
they would be extinct, and our children would not be able to learn about the
lives of the wolves in their habit in the Great Lakes Reigon.

In 1978 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had changed the way it listed
wolves as endangered. All remaining wolves in the 48 contiguous states were
listed, rather than the individual subspecies. Regardless of subspecies,
wolves anywhere in the 48 states were on the list.
34 years ago all wolfs in the lower 48 states were put onto the endangered
species list.
I think that it was a good idea to put the wolves on the list because with
all of the new subdivisions that are being built many animals are being
pushed out of their natural homes. The wolves need homes that are protected,
since they were put on the list their homes are insured. The wolves can now
live their eternity on their own protected land.

The timber wolves were granted protection under the Federal Endangered
Species Act 30 years ago. I think this was necessary because every species
in the world has some advantages to the environment and if they are extinct
there will be problems in that area. Every living thing is important to the
environment and I think its was very important that they were actully
protected and their number has increased.

The Endangered Species Act (1973) was meant to protect the gray wolf from becoming extinct, but it also has caused problems for farmers. The farmers complain that reintroducing wolves into the wild is a danger to their livestock. I tend to agree since the point is not to breed too many so that they are released causing havoc for the farmers, but to have just the right number so that the breed deosnot die out.
