Q: (Initially posted on 10/22/02) FROM KELLY B. IN PA
What causes hiccups? Is it a spasm of the esophagus? Why do some people get them more than others?

A: FROM MENTOR JOAN LUSK IN RI
These sites cast some light on the subject:

http://www.mdadvice.com/library/ped/pedillsymp209.html
http://www.mailbag.com/users/oesophagus/webdoc21.htm

The spasms causing hiccups are movements of the diaphragm - but the
second site discusses effects on the esophagus (or oesophagus, as it
prefers to spell the word.)
They don't mention my own favorite remedy: to drink water from the
far side of the glass. That's much more effective than just drinking
normally.
