Q: (Initially posted on 10/24/02) FROM PARTNER NORRINE O. IN NYC
We are the local affiliate for GEM-SET in NYC, and I'm just wondering what
made the girls in other places apply? It would help us with our recruitment
process. Thanks to anyone who replies!

My answer about why I signed up is late, but I want you to have it anyway.
I hope it helps you get this into other girls hands. I signed up because a
leader at Girl Scouts told me about it and really was excited about the
program. I thought it would be a good place for me to learn more about
sci/eng/tech in a different way than what my teachers did. I thought I
could get better answers about careers and how to line myself up for a
career. I wanted to know things like whether there was still discrimination
against females in SET fields(there is) and how people felt about that and
what they did about it. I wanted real opinions not textbook stuff. I have
gotten great answers. I love reading other peoples questions and the many
answers. You never know who is goingto answer or what they will say, but I
always learn something new. I like that different people will answer the
same questrion different ways and nobody seems wrong. There is often a lot
to reflect on. The quiz questions are awesome and I keep poking into things
I had never knew about or thought about. Stuuf that hasn't come up in
class, I like learning what females can do insterad of always about guy
scientists and all. If I were recruiting girls to join, I would make sure
that the people doing the recruiting were very excited and encouraging about
the site otherwise it might seem boring. Once a person is added to the site
it really is up to them if they use it well. I like to use it but don't
know about everyone else. Also, it is important for those recruiting to
stress that this site is not for people already smart about SET, it is for
them AND especially for people like me who don't know much but want to learn
and don't always know how to do that. Putting adds out about it is good but
the best is to have adults specifically ask teens to sign up and nab them on
the spot. Well, those are my thoughts and I hope it helps.

A: FROM MENTEE ERIN R. IN KY
For me, it was knowing that I had someone who went
through the same thing I am now. Plus, the mentors
have really great answers to all our questions, even
if they are a bit wierd.
Science is a great field to go into and anyone who
likes science and is thinking about a career should
really apply to this program

I found out about GEM-Set through a local summer camp for girls.

A: FROM MENTEE ASHLEY S.
The reason I applied to GEM-SET was because it seemed like it would interest me and help me be comfortable using the Internet and e-mail. Another reason is because I like science and it should help me in my future career plans.
