Q: (Initially posted on 10/29/02) FROM MENTEE RETRINDA A. IN IL
I'm in a career choosing situation and I'm planing on going to collage but
don't know what to go after. There is a program at school that I'm interested in
called the ETC PROGRAM. What this program does is let you start early on the
career that you have in mind. This program gives you practice in the fields you
want to be in so that you can be familiar with it and know whether or not you
still want that to be your career. Is GEM-SET along these same lines and are
there classes I should be taking to get started on a career path that suites
me? I know that I want to be in the technology field, but I don't know what
direction to take. HELP!!

A: FROM MENTOR SUZETTE MINORINI IN TX
A: GEM-SET is along the same lines as it introduces you to women in
multiple engineering and technology disciplines so you can receive
information and guidance to assist you in making career and course of study
decisions. As far as direction, if you're undecided but know you want to
work in technology the best thing to do is take a variety of general
engineering and science courses. This will further introduce you to these
subjects and hopefully produce a WOW MOMENT (or series of them!) enabling
you to determine what interests you most. Along with these courses, you
should continue to study mathematics. This will complement your studies in
engineering and the sciences. Also, join an engineering or science club if
one is available. This is another good way to understand what's happening
in a given technology and introduces you to others interested in the same
topics, who may be in the same situation as you are today. Good Luck!
