A: FROM MENTOR MARNITA CHINTALA
IN RI
Stella, that is a good question. I have tried to be a mentor
for at
least the last 8-10 years in some form or another. I think
that it is
very helpful for people to have role models, and to know that
someone
else experienced similar things to what they are experiencing.
Then you
don't feel like you are the only that ever had to deal with
an issue or
problem. We are all the products of our environment, and sometimes
there are things that we are told or we wonder about, but
don't have
answers to. And if we don't know the truth about things, then
sometimes
we have false ideas or expectations. So the best way to move
forward is
to educate ourselves, so that we can make the best decision
possible
when we need to and make the best judgements when we need
to. There are
many things in my life that I wish I had a mentor for, and
many things
that I was glad that I did have a mentor for, because it made
things
easier for me. And besides, it's fun!

A: FROM MENTOR MAYLING WONG
IN IL
I have only been a mentor with GEM-SET for a few weeks. However,
I have
been a mentor for a high school student since the beginning
of this
summer. The reason I became a mentor was to simply share my
experiences
with someone who might travel the same path I did. Perhaps
the mentee can
learn from my experiences. It turns out that I benefit from
the
relationship as much as the mentee learns from me in that
I learn from
someone who is of a different age, gender, and race. Mentoring
is great
fun - I hope you may benefit, either as a mentee now or as
a mentor later
on.
