QUIZ-OF-THE-WEEK QUESTION FOR STUDENTS:
Q:  What year was the telephone invented?
Bonus question: Which do you think is a more significant invention, the telephone or the Internet?

December 16, 2002
A: FROM MENTEES ALEXIS K. IN VA, ALISSA F. IN INDIANA, ANGELICA L. IN WA, ASHLEY V. IN NJ, CHI H. IN MO, ERIKA G. IN CA, GRACE N. IN KY, IVY H. IN WA, JENNY N. IN AR, KATHRYN T. IN VA, KELLY B. IN PA, LISA R. IN PA, MAGGIE K. IN CT, RETRINDA A. IN IL, RUTH O. IN NH
The telephone was invented in 1875-1876 by Alexander Graham Bell.

BONUS: (Listed alphabetically by FIRST name.)
A: FROM MENTEE ALEXIS K. IN VA
The telephone over internet...it is a faulty opposition. The
internet, like many invention/design factors created "prior" to the
telephone, is a part of the "flowchart" of technological communication.
To me the question is not which is better, but
what will this lead to next?
A: FROM MENTEE ALISSA F. IN INDIANA
I believe that the telephone was a better invention than the Internet,
because in 1876, the only way of communication was by sending a letter or
telegram to someone, but with the telephone, comunication was easier and
faster. The Internet just added on to the many ways of communicating with
eachother.
I also think that the Internet was an important invention because alot
of information in one place makes it so much easier to retrieve that
information.
But, along with the luxuries, comes the negative side. The Internet
has intorduced a whole new world to those around us, even in our
neighborhoods, whos main purpose is to find people and treat them unfairly.
The Internet gives these people the opprtunity to be in an unsafe environment
to meet anyone and everyone they need and want to.
In conclusion, I think that when Alexander Graham Bell invented the
telephone in 1876, the whole world was influenced by it in a good way.
A: FROM MENTEE BAO CHAU N. IN CA
I think that the telephone is more significant than the internet, because the telephone gives instant communication!
A: FROM MENTEE CHI H. IN MO
I think the telephone is more
significant because it is much faster and more clearer to talk to one another.
A: FROM MENTEE ERIKA G. IN CA
I think that both of them are very significant inventions because both are very helpful to us everyday to communicate with others.
A: FROM MENTEE GRACE N. IN KY
I think that they invention of the telephone is more signficant than internet because without the telephone, you would have no internet.
A: FROM MENTEE IVY H. IN WA
The telephone is a more significant invention because it links people all around the word immediately, and can't be replaced, while the internet can be substituted by finding information in books. To substitute the telephone, you would have to write letters or actually go and see the person to talk.
A: FROM MENTEE JENNY N. IN AR
I feel that both the telephone and the internet have there place in life. The telephone is an excellent invention for talking to people. By talking on the phone you can hear a persons voice and know who you are talking to. The phone also gives a person acces to get in touch with someone when the can't be near a computer or other way to log on to the internet.
The internet, however, allows a person to access all types of things. A person can send some else a message, chat, look up information on things ( like when a telephone was invented ), play games with someone who is in another country, etc.
I don't know if I can pick which one was a better invention. I feel that both are equal for the times they were invented and that both have there respected place in our lives.
A: FROM MENTEE KATHRYN T. IN VA
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. Although he had many other inventions to his credit this was quite significant. It is the invention that really helped to shrink the world, since communication could take place in the 20th century all over the world. The internet is wonderful, but the telephone is more significant in that it was allowing worldwide communication long before the internet was even thought about.
A: FROM MENTEE KELLY B. IN PA
I feel that each invention was very significant to the time that it was invented. I must say that without the telephone, there would not be probably would not be an internet because my internet connects using my telephone line. So for this reason I would have to say that the telephone was a more significanbt invention.
A: FROM MENTEE LISA R. IN PA
I think the phone is more important because you can communicate faster. It is
much easier to communicate with others using a phone.
A: FROM MENTEE MAGGIE K. IN CT
I think that the telephone is a more significant invention than the internet because there are more people in the world that have access to a phone than people who have access to the internet. The telephone may be simple but it's lines connect people all over the world at a touch of a few buttons. Though you can get on to the internet with the touch of buttons you can be connected to more people over the phone then over the internet.
A: FROM MENTEE RETRINDA A. IN IL
The telephone and Internet are both great inventions, but I have to say that
the Internet is a more significant invention because you can can get from the
Internet what you can from a telephone & more.
A: FROM MENTEE RUTH O. IN NH
I think that both the telephone and the internet are significant because
before the internet the telephone was the only way that people could pass
messages. And now the internet is very helpful because we get news and most
anything that we want to find on the internet and we can send messages
through the internet. The reason i say that they are both important is that,
normally if one wants to communicate to a friend although it can be done on
the internet the friend might not be on the internet and through the phone
you can be able to find somebody because now we have cell phones too which
are playing a major role in our society today. So i think they are both
significant.
