Q: (Initially posted on December 13, 2002) FROM MENTEE JENNY N. IN AR
How exactly does a cd work? How does it copy songs and movies and things, and how does the laser work to play it?

A: FROM MENTOR JOAN LUSK IN RI
I found a useful site -How CDs Work , by Marshall Brain - by using Ask Jeeves, and asking "How do CD's Work".
To break the system into its parts - the analog information for sound and video has to be made digital, the little 1's and 0's encoded on the CD,
and then a laser reads the 1's and 0's and software turns them back into sound and pictures.
The July 1996 issue of Scientific American was about lasers and CD's too.
