Q: (Initially posted on December 23, 2002) FROM MENTEE ALLISON R. IN KY
What kind of job can you get from going to the College of Agriculture and
majoring in Biotech?

A: FROM MENTOR KELLY BROWN IN MO
Hi Allison,
That is exactly what I did! I was a student in the College of
Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin. I found that this was good
preparation for many different types of things. I went on to grad
school, but could have gone to a biotech company. Many of my friends
went into biotech companies and also into pharmaceutical companies. You
will have many options if you go this route. Good luck!

We are definitely in the age of biotechnology. The avenues for employment
I think are endless. Not only could you attend any type of professional
school such as medical, dentistry, or pharmacy but any of the labs that are
crucial for these fields.

You could work in labs for pharmaceutical companies where research is being
done on different new drugs. You could work at a Research University or
hospitals that are doing the latest research in human genomics or protein
folding.

University of Kentucky has an excellent biotech program and are anxious to
recruit students for the program through the Agriculture department. I don't
want you to think that biotech can only offer opportunities with human
health care but is also viable for industries that involve plant and meat
production for human consumption.

I recently did a summer research at Rensselaer in Troy, NY and they have
obligated a great deal of money to build an entire new building for
biotechnology.

I guess what I can say is that the field is wide open. There are vast
amounts of opportunity for American citizens especially girls to pursue this
career option.

If this stirs your interest, then my advice is go for it. The background
that you will receive in an biotech degree will prepare you for any route
you might eventually take.
