Q: (Initially posted on January 6, 2003) FROM MENTEE DUSTIN B. IN TN
I have always wanted to teach special education or work with young children.
But, teachers do not get paid enough. What career would you suggest that
deals with young children, but also makes a pretty good salary?

A: FROM MENTOR JACQUI JURGA IN MA
My Daughter-in-Law is a Special Education teacher and she is one of the
highest paid in her district. It, of course depends on what you consider a
"pretty good salary". Special Education is a specialized field that
usually gets the higher rates. That may be due to the extra education
required. The challenges are greater also. Sometimes doing something you
love to do and believe in outweigh the amount of money you earn. It is a
hard decision to make, and you need to make it so you are happy and
comfortable with your life.
Good Luck.
