Q: (Initially posted on February 10, 2003) FROM MENTEE KATE S. IN NY
Is there much gender discrimination in medical fields of any kind (eg: veterinary study)?

A: FROM MENTOR SHARON ROSH, DVM IN NJ
To answer your question about gender discrimination in veterinary medicine, I
would say there is not much anymore. About 70-80% of graduates from veterinary
colleges in the US are women. I have been in practice for about 8 years and when
I first went to work, there was still some "good old boy" politics and
discrimination, but now that has all but disappeared. It is a good field to work
in and the pressure of having to prove you are "as good as a man" is now longer a
factor in veterinary medicine, thank goodness!!

Good luck,
Sharon Rosh, DVM
