Q: (Initially posted on February 11, 2003) FROM MENTEE TERESA L. IN KY
I heard that when the space shuttle Columbia left earth, part of the shuttle wing was hurt. So why did they let them leave earth without repairing the wing? Even though that might not be the cause, but wouldn't that be considered dangerous?

A: FROM MENTOR CHANDRA INGLIS IN WV
I'm not an expert in the matter by any means, but from what I
have read and watched on TV, the Debris that may have damaged the wing, hit
during the lift off of the shuttle. I believe that once the lift off has
begun they are committed to the launch and there is no stopping the process,
meaning that there was no choice in letting the shuttle leave the Earth's
atmosphere.
