Q: (Initially posted on February 7, 2003) FROM MENTEE AMBER S. IN HI
Hi everyone
I am really leaning towards becoming a doctor
specializing in emergency medicine or a nurse
specializing in emergency medicine and attend college
in Pennsylvania somewhere. Is there anyone who has
gone to college in PA and is in this field that could
give me their outlook on the whole experience?

A: FROM MODERATOR SARAH SHIRK IN IL
Hi Amber,
I went to a small liberal arts college near Philadelphia, PA called Swarthmore College. It has a very high acceptance rate for students who graduate and move on to Medical school. My roommate studied religion and biology and created her own bio-ethics major. Now she is a physician in Kenya trying to help prevent HIV/AIDS transmission from pregnant Mothers to their babies.

Two Swarthmore graduates are listed on Discover magazines' 50 most important women in science list. One of them worked on the twin 400-inch Keck telescopes in Hawaii and the other received the National Medal of Science. To read more about these science grads go to http://www.swarthmore.edu/news/releases/02/discover.html.

I highly recommend Swarthmore if you want to go to school in a small town, but be near a big city. Pennsylvania is a big state so there are many colleges to choose from, but in my opinion Swarthmore is one of the best!
