Q: (Initially posted on February 14, 2003) FROM MENTEE JILL
D. IN KY
I am a senior in high school, and I am looking for a good
senior project.
I like math and chemistry. The project consists of a 15 min.
presentation,
a 2000 word report and 10 mentor hours. I need to stay in
my local area and my mentor needs to have knowledge of the
research topic. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

A: FROM MENTOR REGINA SIZEMORE
IN KY
Jill:
Do you have a university close to where you live? You might
go to the head
of the science or math department and check and see if there
is someone
there you might shadow or discuss their work. If you have
any type of
industry near your home that would have engineers employed,
the Human
Resources office at such places as Toyota or the Corvette
Plant in Bowling
Green could possible put you in touch with someone that you
could shadow.
Should you not have any of these organizations near you, you
could check
with your local hospital about volunteering. Making your ideas
known to
others in the various areas can always open some doors for
you.
Most professionals are very willing to work with those young
people who are
interested in careers in their area of expertise.
Best of Luck
