Q: (Initially posted on February 20, 2003) FROM MENTEE FRANCISCA L. IN CA
How do you get a double major in Civil Engineering and Architecture? Does it take more time? and What colleges do you recommend for me to go to for my education?

A: FROM MENTOR DIANA DIONISIO IN CA
Any engineering major is going to take a long time becuase there are so
many requirements for engineers, but many of the lower division and some
upper division are also pretty much the same. For instance, it pretty
easy to double major in math and engineering because there is so much
overlap. Have you ever thought of architectural engineering?

A: FROM MENTOR CHARLENE CASSIDY IN SC
Franciscia, if you are interested in both structural (civil) engineering
and Architecture, you may want to consider a degree in Architectural
Engineering, instead of a dual major. This degrees combines elements of
building structural design and architecture. I believe this would be a
better option for you than an dual CE/Arch major. With the dual major
you'll be required to complete elements of the civil engineering degree that
may not be of interest relevant to you (for example transportation,
environmental, hydrology course work). I know of one University that offers
the Arch Eng (Penn State University), only because I got my civil
engineering degree there. However, I'm sure there are plenty of other good
schools across the country that offer this degree. The Arch Eng. degree at
Penn State was a 5 year program. You may want to check at Universities that
offer an Architecture degree to see if they also offer an Arch Eng program.
Best of Luck.
