Q: (Initially posted on February 21, 2003) FROM MENTEE SARA IN CO
I'm interested in geological engineering. What are some good west coast
schools for a degree in geological engineering?

A: FROM MENTOR BRENDA WOLFE
Dear Sara,
I believe that you will not find a better college for geological engineering than the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. This would be in-state tuition for you - which would be even better. I am a graduate from CSM and many of my friends got excellent jobs with their geology degrees from Mines.
If you are determined to go out of state - I would look into Montana Tech, New Mexico School of Mines, or one of the schools in Nevada.
Good luck on your search.

Geotechnical engineering is an up and coming discipline in
engineering. Most good Civil or Structural Engineering schools will have a
program in geotechnical engineering, especially those that do a lot of
research in earthquake engineering. Some west coast schools with good
geotechnical programs that I know of are UC San Diego, UC Davis, and UC
Berkeley.
