Q: (Initially posted on February 21, 2003) FROM MENTEE KELLY B. IN PA
What classes should I look into for my tenth grade year if I want to be a
dental hygienist or something in the dentistry field? Thanks for any advice,
I was almost clueless!

A: FROM MENTOR MARSHA SEGEBARTH IN INDIANA
Kelly, during your high school career you should expose yourself to as much biology as possible. If you have Anatomy and Physiology at your school, take it. Of course, you will have already had Biology, a beginning chemistry course, and a basic physics course. Those are the minimum to obtain while in high school. If you have the opportunity to study microbiology, consider taking that, as well. Dentistry requires a strong background in biology - as does hygiene. Both fields require good people skills, too. Therefore, courses in psychology and communication would prove helpful. Good luck! My husband is a dentist and my daughter is in dental school. They are both very pleased with their choice of careers
