Q: (Initially posted on February 26, 2003) FROM MENTEE EBONY L. IN CO
I'm interested in attending a HBCU (Historically Black College and
University) but I need to find one that offers a major in physical therapy,
sports medicine, or criminal justice (although I don't know what I want to
in criminal justice.) Is there a black college that offers all of these
majors?

Ebony, I really don't know which HBCU's have the programs that you are
interested in, but I know that there is a web site that might be useful
to you. It is http://www.nafeo.org/ which stands for National
Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. This is an
association of black colleges and universities. NAFEO's chief objective
is to implement programs and policies which affect minority student
enrollment, using diverse strategies to ensure an increase of Black
students into HBCU establishments. Check out their web site for info on
programs, internships, and more. Someone there might be able to give
you more specific information about your major. Good luck!

When nobody answered you right away, I thought I'd give it a try.
You're interested in rather diverse areas, so a single search
probably won't work well. I looked for "list of historically black"
and found Congressman Fattah's site
http://www.house.gov/fattah/education/phillycollege.htm
(which contains other useful links). It is linked to this list
http://www.smart.net/~pope/hbcu/hbculist.htm
of HBCU's and you can check out individual colleges from there.

This list http://www.edonline.com/cq/hbcu/advdeg.htm shows all the advanced
(graduate) degree programs at HBCU's; my guess is that the ones with
advanced programs in criminology or PT or sports medicine would also
have bachelor's programs. But there may be other schools that _only_
have the bachelor's level.

Good luck in finding what you want. And if you don't find it at an
HBCU, do consider other colleges too.
