Q: (Initially posted on March 3, 2003) FROM MENTEE MIA M. IN CA I plan on majoring in bioengineering in college. I was wondering what
would be some general courses I would take for this major and what related
careers I could pursue once I am out of college?

A: FROM MENTOR DIANA DIONISIO IN CA
Take as much math and sciences as you can. Bio engineers take a lot of calculus and engineering so it's very important to get exposed. Bio engineers design new medical equipment.

Hi Mia-
There are many careers related to bioengineering. For example, where I work at the University of Illinois in Chicago, there are 7 programs within the Department of BioEngineering. They are: Bioinformatics, Bioentrepreneur, Cell & Tissue Engineering, Biomechanics, Rehabilitation Engineering, Neural Engineering, and Biomedical Imaging. If one of these program sounds interesting to you, I suggest going to the web site at http://www.uic.edu/depts/bioe/ and you can learn much more.

For example have you ever heard of the term MRI,CT, or Ultrasound? These are all Biomedical Imaging methods and extremely important in medical diagnostics. Check out the web site and tell me what you think about this field.
