Q: (Initially posted on March 25, 2003) FROM MENTEE LAURA M. IN CO
What is the difference between the pre-med bachelors and a regular bachelors and all those? I have never really understood the difference.

A: FROM MENTOR JOAN LUSK IN RI
Pre-med requirements are basic science courses in biology, chemistry,
math and physics, and also English. At this school, these courses
don't themselves go into any one subject deeply enough to be a
"concentration" - you have to major ("concentrate") in one subject in
more depth. That subject _might_ be one of the pre-med requirements
- but it needn't be. You could major in music or English or art
history and take the pre-med courses as electives.

A: FROM MENTOR MARSHA SEGEBARTH IN INDIANA
Laura, a pre-med major is VERY similar to several others. Many students enter medical school with a major in biotechnology, chemistry or biology - besides others! Pre-med majors focus on sciences - especially biology and chemistry. In essence, medical schools are looking for students who are well prepared academically as well as well-rounded. Students from other majors - such as sociology and psychology - apply to and are admitted to medical schools as well. In my opinion, a student who does well as a biology or chemistry major would be well prepared to handle a medical school academic curriculum.
