Q: (Initially posted on April 2, 2003) FROM MENTEE PORSHA C. IN CA
If I were interested in math and discovering new
mechanical things, do you think that the love for
these things would fall into being an engineer?

A: FROM MENTOR BARB KONTOGIANNIS IN CO
Absolutely! Engineers are designers and problem solvers in a general
sense. Discovering new mechanical things, designing them, building them,
figuring out how they work (or in many cases why they don't work) is all
part of being an engineer. This goes for mechanical items as well as
electrical devices, computers, and more. If you are interested in math and
mechanisms, engineering could be a good field for you. I always enjoyed
taking apart things, like clocks, toy cars, and radios, and looking at the
insides to see what made them work. Eventually I became a mechanical
engineer and have a lot of fun designing and troubleshooting rocket engines.

I definitely think that you would make a great engineer! I always like math, which was a big reason I went into engineering. And I think if you are interested in mechanical things and like to tinker with how things work, mechanical engineering would be a great career to explore. I'd suggest reading a little about mechanical engineering or searching the web! See if anything about the jobs stirke you!
